Who is Carol Martin "Bill" Gatton
Bill Gatton was a successful entrepreneur, loyal alumnus, respected trustee emeritus, legendary philanthropist and dedicated bridge builder for generations of students at the University of Kentucky. Despite his passing in April 2022, The Bill Gatton Foundation continues to impact our students and campus community.
Through his visionary generosity, he was the first to demonstrate that private support could advance the University to a higher level of excellence and achievement. His exceptional gifts were instrumental in transforming UK for the 21st century and beyond. His leadership in giving also began a culture of philanthropy which is enabling the University to fulfill extraordinary new ways.
Mr. Gatton's unprecedented support for his alma mater distinguished him as the father of modern-day philanthropy at the University of Kentucky.
The Gatton Student Center stands as a fitting tribute to his lifelong commitment to helping young people attain their dreams for a college education and a bright future. Mr. Gatton's philanthropic legacy will endure for decades to come in thousands of students who leave the University of Kentucky empowered for lives of meaning and purpose.
Recently in 2025, The Bill Gatton Foundation bestowed a gift of $150 million to construct a new arts district, including a new College of Fine Arts building and a several-hundred seat theater.
Gatton’s impact on the University of Kentucky exceeds $350 million, making him the university’s single largest donor.
