Who is Carol Martin "Bill" Gatton
Bill Gatton was a successful entrepreneur, loyal alumnus, respected trustee emeritus, legendary philanthropist and dedicated bridge builder for generations of students at the University of Kentucky. Despite his passing in April 2022, The Bill Gatton Foundation continues to impact our students and campus community.
Through his visionary generosity, he was the first to demonstrate that private support could advance the University to a higher level of excellence and achievement. His exceptional gifts were instrumental in transforming UK for the 21st century and beyond. His leadership in giving also began a culture of philanthropy which is enabling the University to fulfill extraordinary new ways.
Mr. Gatton's unprecedented support for his alma mater distinguished him as the father of modern-day philanthropy at the University of Kentucky.
The Gatton Student Center stands as a fitting tribute to his lifelong commitment to helping young people attain their dreams for a college education and a bright future. Recently in 2023, Carol Martin “Bill” Gatton bestowed a transformational gift of $100 million to the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment (CAFE) through The Bill Gatton Foundation. His gift to CAFE is the latest in a series of generous donations that have transformed the university.
Gatton’s impact on the University of Kentucky exceeds $180 million, making him the university’s single largest donor.
